I go to school in NYC and it's definitely opened my eyes to the more cultural aspects of the city. I recommend visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and maybe seeing an opera at Lincoln Center.
If you're interested in seeing parts of the city that are removed from the usual Times Square tourist trap garbage, you should pay a visit to my future alma mater and favorite part of Manhattan, Columbia University. The campus is spectacular and the architecture is terrific. Try to find all the statues on campus- we've got a lot!
Near Columbia you should pay a visit to St. John the Divine (and their peacocks), the Cloisters, and Grant's Tomb. I'd also suggest a visit to the Hungarian Pastry Shop and Labyrinth Books.
You should also visit Greenwich Village and Chinatown.

I enjoyed the Broadway Show 'Beauty and the Beast', my trip up the Empire State Building (pay the extra and get the 'express option to the top or you could queue ALL day), Central Park Zoo and a city open top bus tour.
Things I didn't like..... The rude guy selling souvenir T-shirts on Broadway, what a jerk! The real bad smell on the streets, it was hot and humid and they washed the pavements and it had nowhere to drain to, yuk!
It's not somewhere I'd wish to go again, but I'm glad I've been.
I don't mean that rudely, just my honest opinion!

Don't go in winter with the ocean on both sides it is very cold best empire state building at night but don't miss the day trip either. I would of said Statue of Liberty but now you cannot climb up only walk around bottom (in case you have a bomb ) the empire state building rules. Have a nice time.

Yes, many times luckily for me as I have close friends who live there and my absolute favourite bit is Greenwich Village because it is so cute, pretty and full of interesting history, lifestyles and all kinds of people from all over the world. It just has an energy and vibrancy about it that is unlike anything else I have experienced but I love it!

All parts of New York are interesting. I was born and raised on Long Island. But I really love the Adirondacks, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake.
Beautiful area.

I live near NYC, and go in whenever we have out-of-town visitors. I like all the typical "touristy" things.....statue of liberty, empire state building (but only on a clear day). The food is great, and central park is a wonderful place to go for the afternoon. hope you like it here!
