since my family's getting a new car could we still use the old car's lisence plate since we're gonna throw away the old car? Or do we have to get a new lisence plate

Depends entirely on where you are. In some states, you own the plate and can transfer it if you like, especially if you have a personalized plate. In other states they go with the car. Just ask at the dealer where you ordered the new one, they will be able to tell you.

you can use the same plate as long as you register the new car at the DMV to your old plates for a small fee.
