Because kittens do really dumb things. Put a cover on the box- he won't be able to see you and will be less likely to keep up the behaviour. You want him to do his business, cover it up and leave.
You really don't want him lying in urine and then lying on your bed, do you?
Try putting something soft for him to sit on on the floor every time he goes in with you- an old bathmat maybe. But remove it when you're not using the room yourself- he may start peeing on it. He likes attention and he likes watching you. That's why he follows you in.
My cats are older and still love to watch the toilet being flushed. If they don't make it in before I close the door, the minute I open it, all three are laying right outside, waiting...:)

It might depend on where you got the cat. Every cat I have ever adopted from an animal shelter, even adult cats, do the same thing. I figured they did this because when they were at the shelter, they had no bed in their little cage, just a food/water bowl and a litter box, so they were used to sleeping in the litterbox. Any time I adopt a cat from the shelter, I bring them home, and every day they will go and sit or sleep in the litter box for the first month or two. So perhaps if you got your kitten from a shelter, this could be it! Sounds like you have a very cute and entertaining little kitten!

My 6 yr old cat was sooooocrazy when he was kitten!!!! He would go into littrbox and dig and play for hours throwing litter everywhere! Now if he sees me changing the litter he can't stand clean litter he goes in and squats for awhile until he can squeeze out a few drops. If I were u I 'd try to put down a shirt box with a tiny bit of litter for him to lay on instead of the dirty stuff??

Every kitten I have ever owned always slept, sat, and played in their litter box while they were small. They do grow out of it.
