Catholics are Christians. What you want to ask is the difference between Catholics and Protestants.

There are many many differences.
I will compare Catholicism to BORN AGAIN Christianity for Jesus said in John 3:3 (to Nicodemus) 'I assure you, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God'
Catholics rely on useless works and rituals for salvation. They completely ignore Ephesians 2:8,9 where it is written salvation is a GIFT from God.Now, how does one EARN a GIFT? YOU CAN'T! You only need to ACCEPT this FREE GIFT to be saved. It really is that simple!
Catholics call the priest Father and the pope holy Father. This is total BLASPHEMY!! ONLY God in heaven is the Father.
Confessing our sins to another man (priest) is USELESS. God can hear our prayers just fine WITHOUT an intercessor.
This is just the tip of the iceberg regarding the false doctrines of Catholicism. Please visit this very informative website that compares all the cults/religions and how they believe.

Added note: I'm a Catholic (above my post) I see you have many best answers chosen. That's mainly because there are many many people being misled by Catholocism and they agree with you.
Jesus said 'Wide is the path to destruction(hell) and narrow is the gate to heaven that few choose' Just take the top 2 cults in the world ,Islam and Catholocism. This shows that path is very wide, indeed.
Hvaing a personal relationship with Jesus (NOT with a church/religion) is the ONLY way to heaven.

Added note: Catholic leaders discourage their parishoners from reading the bible, they're afraid they might find out the truth and leave the religion.

Some Chatholics are Christians, and some Christians are Christians, but not all Catholics and Christians are Christians.

The biggest difference is what they teach and believe. Raised as a Catholic, I was indoctrinated with man written documents and rituals that never allowed me to fully understand what it was when we are called Christians. Some Catholics believe that good works are needed to enter into God's kingdom. Other's believe in purgatory.

The biggest difference in my experience though is the rebirth experience. In John 3, as Jesus is talking to Nicodemus, he states that a man must be reborn to enter into the kingdom of God. In 18 years of weekly church services, this passage was never explained. When I became a Christian at the age of 27, I still had no clue what it meant until my life changes became a testimony of the power of Christ as the center of one's life.

As to what they do in the church that is so different... Catholic, Episcapalian, and several other denominations focus around mass, which while a way to approach God, was a method created by man. In the non-demoninational churches, the bible is the center of the service, which focuses and transfigures our worship, service, community and lives. The Catholic church tends to not go as deep into the bible but skim the service.

To my Catholic brothers and sisters out there, please do not think that this is an attack or an afront on the Catholic church. I know of several Catholics who are genuine Christians... however, I also know Catholics (from my own family) who I grieve over, because even though they know that Christ died for their sins, they don't have a relationship with him and the fruit they are producing is non-existent. :( Yet they go to church every Sunday "religiously".

Scholars agree that the name "Christian" was given to the followers of Christ. What about followers of Mary? They are called, "Catholics".

Catholics are taught to pray a prayer to Mary called the "Hail Mary". Well, It is impossible for Catholics to worship Mary because "Worship" has been defined as applying only to God.

The Rosary is an open and graphic worship of Mary plain and simple.

True Christianity don't use any graven images in there place of worship and bowing into them.

True Christianity don't pray the rosary or need to count our prayers with the help of beads.

True Christianity do not call another "Father" or "Holy Father" in reference to a spiritual or Church Leaders.

True Christianity have only 1 priest. My Lord Jesus Christ.

True Christianity's belief based "only" what is written in the Holy Scripture and not in any man made catechism.

True Christianity don't believe about Mary or Saints can answer prayers or can interceed for us. Jesus Christ alone is our Intercessor and our great High Priest. I Timothy 2:5, John 14:13-14, I Peter 5:7

True Christianity don't believe in any Church made dogmas.

True Christianity don't believe in Purgatory invented by Pope Gregory I. I thank God for Jesus so I don't have any need for purgatory. Jesus is enough to purify my sins.

True Christianity don't need confession to a priest. Jesus hears my prayers, confession and my sins to be forgiven.

Catholicism is just Christianity when it was first converted to the Pagan Romans. Let's not forget that the Romans sent Jesus to his death. But inevitably, the people started revolting, and the Romans were forced to convert. All the pagan holidays were then made Christian, but the symbols remain. As if you see the symbols all over Catholic churches and their leaders, hence the Pope wears a long hat which really is a phallic symbol. The Catholics also have a strong emphasis on Mary, which is remeniscent of the Female Goddesses in Paganism.

People who say that Catholics are Christians don't have any idea what Christianity is about. Catholics do you have any idea what Christianity is about? Can you honestly say that you are the same thing as a follower of Jesus Christ who has a personal relationship with Him. Are you saved? Do you know God's savation? If you do what's up with all these sacraments? A Christian is someone who knows Christ, some do I don't deny that, but many don't. To be blunt Catholicism is a mixture of Paganism and Christianity which started up in the 300's. It's an offshoot of Christianity but I don't recognize it as Christian itself. The theology is very unchristian, if you look closely there are major differences between the two faiths. One is simple, the Gospel, the other is a complex religion with a lifetime of sacraments to perform. so there in a nutshell.

Basically, Catholics use priests to tell their sins too. The Priests have a special relationship with God like Paul or Peter. The parishioners use priest like a intermediary.

There are also many different types of Christianity (Baptist, Methodist, etc...) that to point out the differences would take much more space than yahoo allows.

If you asked this question to decide what church to go to - I would advise you just to visit many churches and find one you feel comfortable with.

Catholic is a religion. Religion is how people attempt to reach out to and explain God. There are many different religions (e.g. Baptist, Mormon, Buddhist, etc.)

Christianity is having a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior you cannot go to heaven.

I think it's important that this distinction is made because people can give all of their time and effort into a religion and still not be a Christian. To be a Christian means that you are a follower of Christ; meaning that you listen to what He taught and try to apply it to your everyday life, and not limit yourself to one or two times a week.

I hope this helps you in some way.

Christians began with the Catholic (Universal) church. The protestant reformation made a split in the 1500's I think. That split branch is the one that we call Christians today. Some Catholics are Christians, but not all. A Christian is someone who allows Jesus to live through them and follows His teachings.

Catholics worship Mary and the saints, Christians believe that to be worshiping other gods.
From my experience with professed Catholics, families get their infants baptized into the church and then tell them that gets them into heaven. Then, those baptized kids grow up and go on living like hell. They show up at church off and on and maybe go to a confessional or two. They think that this means they go to heaven.

That is contrary to what the Bible teaches, only those that live in a personal relationship with Jesus as Lord get into heaven. We don't have free license to go out and sin as long as we confess it to a priest. Jesus says that if we love Him we'll obey Him. We have grace when we make mistakes, but we don't have grace to take advantage of His forgiveness. God judges the heart.

some that i will think of of off the precise of my head are, at first, those you point out, and petitioning the saints and Mary for intervention, yet in addition the actuality that for the period of Catholicism, one ought to admit his/her sins to a clergyman (additionally executed in another denominations, yet maximum notoriously between Catholics), baptism of babies (that's a huge one), and the theory Mary had no different babies. you may inspect the 1st hyperlink to make certain what the Bible has to assert approximately those ameliorations. Many say that Catholics are Christians, and that they could be, there is Catholics who're Christians, yet they're being lie to by skill of a pagan faith. The Catholic church isn't the "unique church" as Catholics declare. the unique church grew to become into based upon Jesus (no longer Peter, via fact the Catholic church believes) and Peter and different apostles unfold the gospel after Jesus' dying. while the rulers in Rome tried persecuted Christians in Rome and tried to get rid of Christianity, they found out after a together as that they does no longer be triumphant. so as that they figured "in case you won't be able to triumph over 'em, connect 'em". yet what they did then is, althought they made Christianity the expert faith, they further to God's be conscious and adjusted it, and positioned themselves in cost, with a view to maintain the potential over the folk. This grew to become the Catholic church. it is likewise why no person yet officiants of the church have been allowed to very own or examine the Bible, and why only Latin grew to become into allowed - they did no longer want people to be attentive to what grew to become into fairly in it, and the popular public did no longer understand Latin. it is why Martin Luther grew to become into this type of revolt in his time, via fact he translated the Bible into different languages and the Catholic church lost a number of its potential.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

With love in Christ.
