I am 18 and want to do something good for our world. I thought about joining the National Guard, but I couldnt handle it. I am seriously considering the Peace Corps...but what else is there?

If you want to pay them, there are hundreds of organizations that will let you work for good. If you want them to pay you enough to live on, the choice drops. It isn't cost-effective for organizations to fly unskilled people to foreign countries; so, if you want to go overseas for a short time, there are many organizations that have what could best be called "working vacations". You pay them, much as you would if you went for two weeks of fun in the sun, but you do something worth-while and come back with memories of accomplishment instead of memories of hangovers.

The Peace Corps takes people who have skills that developing countries have asked for; usually teachers, nurses, engineers and farmers. 95% have college degrees, the rest have years and years of experience. If you have been helping your parents farm since you were 8, and led your 4-H group, you have a shot; otherwise, you'd do better off to finish college with a degree in Civil Engineering, Teaching English as a Second Language or Nursing.

H for H will let you swing a hammer on weekends while you work or go to school during the week. The Peace Corps is a 27-month commitment, and 60 hours a week if you are doing it right. (3 months of training, 2 years of service.)

Your church may have a charitible works arm. The United Way in your county will probably have a list of organizations that need volunteers.

If you click on "Advanced" and enter the words "Peace Corps", you will see 4 - 6 sponsored links with alternatives to the Peace Corps.

Have you considered Greepeace? Either way you need to focus on the positive and avoid fighting against negative issues. Personally if I were in your shoes I would plan to spend the next few years on the west coast of Canada. There one would find thousands of happy people who moved there during the Viet Nam conflict so I suppose there are thousands of recent arrivals as well.
