Common salt, or sodium chloride, is something our bodies require. We couldn't live without it.
The problem is that most of us consume more than we need.
Excessive salt intake can cause water retention & swelling or bloating. It can raise blood pressure & increase the risk of stroke or heart attack. It tends to put a lot of strain on the kidneys.
There are stories of shipwrecked sailors becoming insane & then dying from drinking seawater. This is because such an overload of salt throws their blood chemistry way off & dehydrates them faster.
I don't think it's possible to take a fatal overdose of salt. But excessive use can cause health problems or aggravate existing problems. So, I suppose it can kill indirectly.

Alright folks...remember bio class? Your body needs to reach an equilibrium between the cells and the surrounding areas to it. take in too much salt, and suddenly your body wants to release water from your cells to match the amount of salt on the outside. Now the cells have no water meaning that they cant function. They cant function, you cant do...well, anything really. The swelling, etc. is really the water flooding the area around your cells...which is also why you pee alot after consuming alot of salt. BUT...without enough salt already in the cells, theres nothing to make the balence uneven enough to make the water be retained through osmosis. (look it up) You go crazy cause your brain cells cant work without water, and you eventually die of dehydration because without water in your body, your cells shrival and die, and with them, you!

Too much sodium gives you hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure. Your recomended sodium intake is based on your age, weight and other factors, so I would ask your doctor.

It dehydrates you, that is why people can't live on seawater or they loose their minds...but other than that I have never heard of anyone dying of that.Plenty of fresh water to mix with the potato chips...
