Poker is a game of skill with some luck thrown in to spice things up. For a complete novice whether they win of lose is mostly dependent on how the cards fall (luck). A talented professional can use their skills to remove nearly all the luck factor in the long term. The fact that there is an element of luck is why people who can harness the skill are able to make a living. If it were 100% skill the best player would win every time. In poker there is a small chance the best player doesn't come out on top, but if you play for long enough they will always win. If you want examples of exactly how it is a skill game just watch the videos on http://www.pokerdynasty.net/ they will show you that correct strategy can set you apart from the crowd and make great money.

It's definitely both, but I would say skills are ultimately more important than luck. If it were just luck, there wouldn't be people making a living playing poker (there are no "lottery pros"!).
There's a lot of ways to learn: books, online tutorials. One thing I think is really helpful is watching some of the poker shows on TV these days: Poker After Dark, Celebrity Poker Showdown, etc. You can really get a feel for the game being played, and since they show you the cards and talk about the strategy as the hand is played, you really learn as you go (without risking any money!).

Poker is 100% skill and 100% luck. Anyone can get insanely lucky and win lots of pots - but in the long run only a disciplined and intelligent player is going to win consistently.
The internet is full of excellent websites with advice on poker. I also recommend participating at an online poker forum to discuss strategy. I participate at this site, http://www.poker-strategy.org ... the people are generally friendly and helpfull and will be more than happy to help somebody just getting into poker.

Poker is a game of skill, and luck is just a bonus.
Skills are enhanced through actively engaging on playing poker, because the best resource of learning is thru experience.

Definately skills with a luck component.
That means that your skill can allow you to win, even with a poor hand.If you can read your opponent and can bluff successfully, you can win with a bad hand and win more with a good hand. Luck is just an element that suggests whether you play with good or bad cards.
There are tons of books on the subject. Try them and practice online.

The players that do consistantly well are skilled at playing the game and reading other players emotions, but a bit of luck is always involved as well.

Definitely skill. You must know your pot odds, how to play position, percentage of hitting your draw card, most importantly how your opponents play, and so forth. I say its 80% skill, 20% luck. Read any book by Doyle Brunson. I highly recommend it.
