The United States Air Force (USAF) and Air Force Reserve (USAFR) are federal control and funded. Their missions are in the interest of the USA.

The Air National Guard (ANG) is state controlled (during peace time) and are mostly funded by the state. Their missions are in the interest of the state.

About 90% of the USAFR and ANG are "weekend warriors"--traditional reservists and guardsmen. They serve 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks out of an year. The reminder 10% are full-time and/or active duty.

USAF members are active duty--there are no "weekend warriors".

The retirement system, some of the pay and some of the benefits differ between USAF and USAFR & ANG.
