At most of the baby showers that I've been to, including my own, the hostess always bought a gift. It does not have to be expensive, being that they prepared the food, bought the cake, etc. My personal opinion is that the hostess should not have to buy a gift, nor would I expect them to. They've done enough already.

yes the hostess should give a gift

how about a video or a scrapbook of the shower given at a later date. or i went to one where the guests played games and the little prizes were baby items that they then gave to the mom to be. the hostess can give them something small since they are the one hosting the shower

Yes, and it should be something personal and with love. Try gettting her a premade scrapbook page where she could put photos of the Shower on. Type CZweibohmer Designs into a Yahoo search and you will come to a store that sells premade layouts and does custom work as well.

Take Care and Congrats to the New Mom! :)

Yes. Hosting the party might be considered a "gift", but it's a gift to the other guests. You still owe a gift to the mother.
