It is rude to snap gum or blow bubbles in front of others, but chewing it with a closed mouth is not (at appropriate times). In my circle it is considered rude to chew gum during religious meetings, staff meetings, funerals, dinner parties (where conversation is involved) and upscale stores (obviously not an exhaustive list). People who conspicuously chew gum are considered common. Sounds a little snooty (but I didn't make up these rules)... I wonder what Miss Manners would say?

Don't get me wrong - I love to chew gum. But there is a time and place for everything. The thing is, we are in no position to tell someone else that their cherished gum snapping habit is rude. Everyone has to make that choice for themselves.

Chewing gum with mouth open is disgusting and unsightly. Ewww! I know of friends who like to snap gum infront of others and they enjoyed it lol. I find the sounds they make are just loud and disturbing. And yes, it's rude to do so in public. If you really have to do it, do it at home.

I totally agree with you. Not only is it rude, it's disgusting and makes people look and sound like COWS and HORSES!!

It may keep peoples breath fresh to chew gum, however while they are chewing gum with their mouth open, they are ruining their teeth! ask any dentist, they will tell you, the warmth of your saliva mixing with the cold air that one breathes in while chewing with the mouth open, just drys the plaque and tarter on your teeth twice as fast!!

No, you are not and I totally agree with you. There is nothing worse than travelling on public transport or being at close quarters with someone who is chewing gum or eating foods and making terrible noises. Why do American movie makers finds it necessary to highlight eating noises in films - it really irritates me?

I personally do not mind people chewing gum, but I hate it when people chew it (well, anything for that matter) with their mouths open, smacking their food, and spitting it all over while they talk. It's utterly disgusting.

That is my ultimate pet peeve. I don't want to hear you eating your food or any noise that comes out of your mouth unless they're words. The hair goes up on the back of my neck and I get instantly irritated to the point I have to leave the room so I don't have to hear it. It is incredibly poor etiquette and really very rude.

I was taught to never chew with your mouth open, and to never chew gum in public.

I was raised that way. It drives me up a wall. I hate snapping gum. It makes them look ridiculous. I think they think they look cool, but they look ignorant.

I think it is rude anytime day or night unless you are in a room alone. People don't like to hear others smacking their chops!!!!!!
