My doctor suspects I have DVT and I'll be seeing a specialist in a few days. Meantime I wonder if anyone can tell me what are the usual treatment options, and also are there any alternative medicine regimes I could follow? Thanks.

The best treatment if you want to come away from this without a stroke or pulmonary embolism that can be fatal,is following the Md's treatment plan.DVT is nothing to play around with.Usual therapies include bed rest, anticoagulants by IV drip and blood thinner by mouth,or a with a shot given in the fatty tissue or Subq Included would also be chest x-ray and Doppler or scan to check circulation in the legs You will also need daily blood work to monitor your clotting times, critical in monitoring while on IV drug therapy. At home bed rest keep your feet elevated. Take care. SW RNP

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, only it was my right ankle. I became unable to walk for a few months, and for over a year and a half, it remained red and swollen. Even after it got better, it made me almost fall a few times, like it was weak. They finally diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and arthritis. I still feel something in that ankle and it stays a little swollen, even after 2 years. I think if it was gout that your husband suffers from, it should have responded to the treatment by now. These things can be hard to diagnose and treat and can also take a long time to resolve. I know your husband must be frustrated. as I was, but he needs to see a rheumatologist. Tell him to ask for blood tests to be done, such as a rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other immune disease panel. If he is overweight, he needs to eat a low fat, high fiber diet, and exercise at least 3 times a week(if he is able), hard to do with a swollen foot I know, but maybe he can do that later. As usual, drink 8-8oz of water daily.

Different systems have different treatment options and so, first get the specialist opinion. If the main stream medicines don't work, or for some reason you prefer the alternative route, yes, options exist.
