Christianity has a choke hold over people, saying that they will go to hell if they don't follow the bible. Many Christians are skeptical of the bible's authority, but acquiesce to it nonetheless. They figure that doing what it says doesn't hurt them in any way and if the bible turns out to be right, the payoff is enormous.

Uh huh and they get so upset when you point this out to them.
They like they're going to heaven because they chose to beleive, not because they've been brainwashed. And they honestly dont seem to see the hypocrisy of their actions - as you say repenting and then going right back out to do it again.
So many christians are really just Sunday christians. They are sinners the other 6 days. Thats why the catholic church has survived. Priests stay employed by hearing confessions, and tell their congregations they must repent and confess or they will go to hell.
Whoever thought up this idea for controlling the masses was brilliant.
I "deconverted" - ooh I like that word - when I was 15 - but it took another 15 years to get rid of all the brainwashing I received.

I'm sorry you or someone you know (?) has experienced this. As a Christian, these kind of actions coming from other "Christians" frustrate me as well. My dad considers himself this great Christian, yet has cheated on my mom their entire marriage. Actually, I'm not sure those kind of people are true Christians. But of course, we're not supposed to judge so I try not to tread on that too heavily. Please try not to generalize that all Christians are like this; unfortunately, they do seem like the majority today. There are those of us who really strive to do what we're taught. I actually believe the label of Christian is used entirely too loosely nowadays.
As for the "book written by men," we Christians believe that The Holy Bible is an infallible book written by men as the inspired Word of God. We believe that God is the author, but he inspired man to write it.
In addition, to address the heaven issue... Christians do not believe you earn your way into heaven by your actions. We believe that salvation is a gift given by God through Jesus Christ. We only have to accept this gift and try our best to live according to what God and Jesus say in the Bible. "Christians" who think this is a license to sin are dangerously wrong. I am certainly not perfect - I falter all the time. I just try to keep in mind that I'm made an example since I'm a Christian and I'm probably being watched to see if I really lead the lifestyle I'm supposed to. Again, I fail at that all the time.
And yes, you're right - no wonder people are deconverting by the thousands. God bless you.

Its a control thing... religion is a control device implemented to deter crime. The government knew that a mortal telling another mortal to do something will only go so far... SO... religion comes to play and it punishes people for eternity and that is a punishment that you can't get out of. So make people fear something that can't be proven until its too late is a better way to force them to do what you want. The thing about it Christianity is that they teach more about the doing bad will get you into hell more than doing good is for the best in your life today. So they force it on people to do what the Bible tells them in a non direct way to do. And it tells them that you must convert as many as possible, and that will help in the cause to get you into Heaven...The thing is that Christians should learn from the past ... cause Christianity is not the oldest religion and before that their ancestors believed something else. Religion is a state of mind....and it was forced and written by man.. not a divine being... cause I do believe that a divine being would show you the path in a more unexplained way than a book written by man.

Christians are human and make mistakes. Most don't claim to be perfect. The book was inspired by god (bible) and to many offer light in a world like this. Repenting is something everyone must do as the only perfect person was Jesus Christ. This is what he, through god taught people. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with Christians, no one should judge another.

I have been a Christian for 50 yrs, and have never done the things that you accuse all Christians of doing. It is most unfortunate if that has been your experience. I personally believe that the Bible is the Word of God. It has stood the test of time. It has changed the lives for the better of the people who have read it. We all have to base our lives on some truth, I have chosen Jesus. I have said this many times to people, but, people will let you down, Jesus will not. Folks who leave Christianity usually do so, because someone hurt them in some way. That is sad, because it was not Jesus.

I think you have your labels wrong. None of the Christians I know belittle non-Christians, nor do they "help only when they feel like it." If we "harm" someone how do we correct that except by asking for forgiveness, repenting and growing from the experience. By the way the Bible is God's message - not mans.

Because it wasn't "written by men" - at least not in the way you mean. All Scripture is God-breathed.
We know we're going to Heaven because a guy who healed the sick just by touching them, spoke only the Truth, raised the dead and came to life himself after a horrific execution, promised us that we would, and that He would return someday. So if a guy who can raise the dead promises He'll return, I'd believe Him.
I've never heard a Christian "belittle and degrade" anyone. If you feel "belittled and degraded", it's probably because the Holy Spirit is convicting you in your heart of your bad behavior, and you react with anger and violence.

I think it is very difficult to say that you fall under a religion. Noone knows what is really going on. If God exits he may just not care what you do unless it is truely evil. How can you define evil? Is a slap to someone you dont know an act of evil? Is robbing a bank evil if you are utterly poor? Is killing children and saying that god told you to do it the forces of good? Who knows. THat is why you should, in my opinion, not worry about it. Just be kind to others and beat the crap out of people who kill for fun and whatnaught. This is why I could not be a cop as I would severely punish those who broke the law.

Not all Christian are like that. But to answer the first question is extremely simple.Yes men wrote the Bible,But who do you think created those men?And if He couldn't get them to write a few words for Him We are all in serious trouble because He created things beyond His control. But we both know that isn't true. But please do not Judge God by people,Actually we shouldn't judge Him at all.People see it so wrong to judge other people but when it comes to GOD they don't even give Him the benefit of a doubt and get to know Him first. What a pity,But that's our option, one a whole lot of poor souls are going to be regretting for a long time.Take care and may GOD bless you.
