attack a persons beliefs without attacking the person?

I've seen it said on here many times that it's acceptable to attack someones religious beliefs, or lack there of, but not the individual.
How is that possible?

Your religion is a part of who you are but it's not the single defining feature. I'm not saying this because I feel it's right to attack someones religion because it's not. It's okay to debate the finer points of religion with another but you shouldn't force your beliefs on another and you shouldn't look down on someone because they believe differently. It's the differences in the world that make life worth living. If every house were the same color and every bird the same breed... the suicide rate would increase. We each add a beautiful spice to this life and we need to remember that when dealing with things as personal as religion.

I personally believe that values define who we are, not religious beliefs or non-beliefs. I'm Atheist but I have nothing against believers (of any Faith) as long as they have my same values: respect, tolerance, honor, loyalty, and selflessness. Where people get those values from, is none of my concern, main thing is to have them. A good human being is a good human being, no matter what his/her beliefs are. Besides, I never attack anyone, I'm a defensive player, I strike back when attacked, but never start a fight;)

Nobody should ever attack anybody or anything, however there are some people who perceive even "have a nice day" as an attack. Self-concept is always going to be a major communication factor when you're dealing with the public at large, so it's best to state facts, opinions, speak as sweetly as possible with altruistic intent. The rest is up to the listener or reader.

Because many of us share the same beliefs but we are not the same. There is much more that defines a human being than what they believe, and much more that defines a belief than the person that believes it.

This reminds me of that South Park episode where Jimbo tries to get the KKK to be FOR changing the South Park flag, because if the KKK believes in something everyone else should be against it.

Since being human is just part of our spiritual journey (and each spirit is human many times) religious beliefs can be beneficial although not necessary. Our basic personality tends to remain the same through each human life we live but our goal is to work our way through many challenges and do the best that we can. Therefore, it is not necessary to put others down for their beliefs because tolerance and acceptance are just part of our spiritual development.
