Power of suggestion and maybe you are a little prone to it. If you already have a subconscious concern about it and someone brings it up it re-inforces your fears. Furthermore, sypmtoms are brought up in conversation perhaps because it's that time of year when those symptoms actually occur, such as the flu. Just wash your hands frequently, drink a lot of water and stop listening.

I suppose we all have a little hypochondriac in our heads sometimes. I don't really feel symptoms of illness, but tell me an itchy story and I start to scratch.

you mean hear?
Some people are prone to be hypochondriacs- who are just waiting for a new sickness.
Some people actually are sick.
Some worry that they might be so they get worried when they hear symptoms that they have or have had.

Please carefully read your question and think about how you word & spell things.
