The number of AIDS cases in China keeps growing, much like in any country in the world. What is scariest is that some of the growth is very preventable. A news story about a country magistrate who was under pressure to fill blood donation quotas actually turned in pints of blood he knew "could" be tainted but "didn't know they were infected". They all were and were given out to others. Another practice was to put reb blood cells in a common "vat" before returning them to donors giving plasma. Returning red blood cells during plasma is a common practice everywhere, but through a closed system.

It's examples like these that are scary for HIV/AIDS predictions. Another is the inability of Chinese officials to fully report everything because of the complexity of "face". There is always a question as to whether the official estimates are really accurate because they don't want to be embarassed in the world sector.

China, needless to say, has an HIV/AIDS issue only it can address. They have thankfully started ad campains and education towards safer sex (sometimes even more complete and accurate than the Bush-driven US government's lame attempts and hamstringing of proven programs) and perhaps they can escape what some are expecting to be a crises worse than Africa's.

I think the estimates on China's AIDS cases are low. There is still a lot of misinformation out there. Just a few years ago 30,000 farmers were infected with improperly cleaned needles when they donated blood. Many of them ended up infecting their wives as well. Keep in mind that sex and marriage can be two different things here. Many men have sex outside of marriage and it is tolerated. So if some of these farmers also visited prostitutes, who don't always use condoms, they could have spread it to them and any of their customers and so on. I know people who have been to brothels and the girls don't always insist on condoms. I know a couple of foreigners who got HIV from their Chinese girlfriends. There are people here who think you can't get AIDS if you only have sex within marriage. Some think if you shower after sex you can't get AIDS. There is a campaign to educate the people, but understand that many people still think Black people are black because they don't wash. Chinese people can be quite naive about many things and sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS is one of them.

Pi, please don't be one of those foreigners who just comes to China to chase the local girls. Having sex with a foreigner can label a girl as damaged goods here. Also, if you have sex with the wrong girl you could find yourself facing her family in a shotgun marriage. I've seen it happen. Also, keep in mind that depending on where you go, you may be the only foreigner some Chinese meet. Don't leave them with a bad impression of the rest of us.

650,000 people are known to have HIV in China, including about 75,000 AIDS patients. These numbers are growing rapidly, so China is working hard to educated people about AIDS to prevent any future epidemics, because China has such a large population.
