is it possible to change or add to the colours on your tattoo, or is the theory the same as colouring in with pens, meaning that the colours will mix and create some browny colour?

after the tattoo has already been done? or to mix colors while the ink is still in the caps?
my artist sometimes mixes colors to get the right shade... like adding a little white to a blue to make it lighter. and sometimes it is possible to change colors on an already completed tattoo. my mom got a tattoo years ago and the artist was supposed to make one part of it blue but he did green instead. she hated it so this year my tattoo artist went back over it and made it purple and it is beautiful. not all colors can be changed tho. like you can't change black into yellow or anything.

It really depends on the original colors and how faded they are and what you are trying to put over them.

If not careful, you can get a mucky, dull color, but a skilled artist should be able to help you out no problem.

when your color fades you can get it recolored. If it's a light color and you want a darker color on top, then I think you can.
