Any averagely intelligent person without severe mental problems understands universality - I dont want to be brutally attacked so I dont do that to other people - I dont want my possessions taken so I will not take other peoples. I think people can be fairly good without being taught but to get a grip on morals we have to discuss what is right and what is not.

I would say both. My parents gave me my morals and my conscience tells me what is right and wrong. Even though I'm an atheist I also live by the Golden Rule. And I believe that Jesus was a real person who had some good thoughts on morality, too.

before i was a true christian, cursing, fighting, pornography, lustful desires, and every other thing you could think of were fine.
but after it was like all those things seemed to lose their appeal.
its like candy that lost its flavor!
My morals came from Gods word, the bible.
Society is corrupt, just look at all the filth in hollywood and elswhere.

From my perspective, as a Buddhist, I believe some of our senses of harm vs. non-harm, etc. karmically travel with us in rebirth from previous births, and then we learn societal standards, etc. in our new lives.
