Turbidity is the presence of suspended materials in water. Items such as clay, silt, organic material or other inorganic materials comprise turbidity.

Turbidity may not affect health, but it is a function of water quality. Solids settle and can harm water streams.

Fecal Coliforms are poop in water. Too much can make you sick.

Visual surveys of water include turbidity, color, odor, foamability. Each of these can decrease water quality.

Biological testing is very important because biological agents may modify the phyical or chemical characteristics of water. Biological sampling includes biological oxygen demand (BOD) and other tests.

Water for drinking and cooking purposes must be made free from disease producing organisms (such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses and helminths [worms]).
