Pudge's is fabulous!! I lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia for 25 years, Pudge's has hands-down the best cheesesteak in the suburbs. Pat's and Geno's are serious tourist traps. And no matter what people say about Jim's on South St (some would say that it too is a tourist trap), I think they make the best cheesesteak in the city. Some will say that all you have to do is walk into any little mom&pop shop and you'll walk away with a great cheesesteak, no way, not true. Happy Eating!!

Geno's and Pats are 100 feet away from each other
There on 9th street
When you get a cheesesteak get there cheese fries aswell
Also
Go to Rick's in Reading Terminal Market
Tony Luke's is really the best. It's on E. Oregon between a gas station and the I-95

My favorite sandwich in the world is the cheesesteak and since moving here five years ago I have tried to sample as many as possible. Here is my list from best to worst:
1. John's Roast Pork
2. Jim's
3. Steve's Prince of Steaks
4. Chubby's
5. Dalessandro's
6. Tony Luke's
7.Sonny's Famous
8. Campo's
I haven't tried Geno's or Pat's b/c so many people told me how bad they are. Contrary to what one person said "with" means with onions, not with cheese according to wikipedia.
This website is a great resorce for Philly sandwiches.

South Street - Jims, around 5th or so. My mom makes great cheesesteaks too, well, she did until we grew up and she decided NOT to cook for adult 'kids.'
Another place that I enjoyed a good cheesesteak in Philly is a little place called Charlies Water Wheel. It's one of those secret places that only locals know about. It's on Sansom Street in downtown Philly; the food is wonderful!
Since you asked, I'll go a step further and tell you that the best hoagies, are at The Fresh Grocer near the U of PA at 40th and Walnut. They give you enough meat on those sandwiches to last several days. Share it with someone.
For the uninitiated, a hoagie is a sandwich with meat (cold cuts), lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese...and more, you choose.
They have another location in West Philadelphia but that area of the city is becoming increasingly dangerous.
Man, I miss Philly but not the crime there, be careful, 406 people were killed in Philly in 2006.
I wish I could tell all the young people that seek an education - "Not Philly" the danger outweighs the benefits.

Geno's and Pat's are both tourist traps now...
Go to Rick's in Reading Terminal Market (and get some of Delilah's mac and cheese while you're there!)
Jim's on South St is good too...
If you decide against Rick's though... Tony Luke's is really the best. It's on E. Oregon between a gas station and the I-95 overpass.

I have been to all of the major cheesesteak eateries in Philly (for 25 years). The most famous (and to get full Philly experience) are Pat's and Geno's. Geno's is must better. And an added tip:
- Be prepared to order.
- Tell them "with" or "without" meaning if you want it with or without cheese.
Good Luck.

Genos and Pats both stink. They are famous because they are very old..but neither is very good. Someonem mentioned Jims on south street...they are right...that's an excellent cheese steak. There are actually several Jim's..and i;ve never had a bad experience at any of them. My opnion...best cheese steak is at a place called Delassadnros in roxborough. They have awesome rolls....deliscious meat...and what really sets them apart is the quality of their condiments. Their ownions and peppers are the best anywhere. Tony Lukes is very good. I am telling you....Pats and Genos both stink..they are for tourists and people who are so drunk at 2 am that they can't tell the difference.

You've got to go to Geno's or Pat's because that's the fullness of the cheesesteak experience, but, unless you have a real connection to the tradition of those shops they are a little dry and plain. I prefer Meglio in Newtown. So if you make it to the NE suburbs stop in there.

Everyone has their fav (I like Jim's and Ricks), but each year Philadelphia Magazine has a Best of Philly issue and one of the categories is cheesesteak. I can't vouch for it - but it's another opinion:
