There are a couple of different methods for taking a look at your interior. A gastroscopy is where they sedate you and a gastroenterologist takes a long tube and inserts it down your esophagus and into your stomach. They usually take some pictures of the inside of you and sometimes take some tissue biopsies. The less invasive procedure is a Upper Gastrointestinal series. That is where they give you a liquid to drink and then they take an xray as the liquid flows through your esophagus into your stomach and following into your small bowel. Most likely you are having the UGI series first and then they may or may not decide to have you scoped.

The doctor will insert a long tube, with a camera attached to the end of it, through your nose and down through your throat to the stomach area. You will be sedated while the doctor does this. Usually with GERD, you have irritation in the digestive tract which can lead to ulcers. Using the cameras, the doctor will be able to see where they are and how big they are.
