You need to trace backwards from the present. Most people have short-form birth certs (b/c's) which doesn't give much info. Try to get long form b/c if can. Example: Get your grandfather's b/c which shows his place of birth & parent's names. If lucky it will show where his parent's were born & the age of his parents when he was born. Then write to the county's of birth or call them to find out how much they charge. You can find good info on death certificates & marriage records also. Here are some websites: familysearch.org (free), legacy.com (has obituaries & charges up to $3.95 per record), myheritageresearch.com (free to search) & the best one is ancestry.com which charges membership. You have access to US birth, census, marriage, death, immigration & military records. Court, land & probate records. UK census records & birth records.

This is a general hint. Even though you go in through YA Canada, YA Australia, YA UK or YA USA, all of the questions go into one big "pot" and get read by everyone in the world who speaks English. Most of the people here are in the UK and USA, but you sometimes get questions and answers from people who worry about kangaroos eating their roses. So - put a nation, or, better yet, if you are asking about a specific individual, a nation and a state / province in all of your questions. It will help people help you.

Many public libraries in the USA and most Family History Centers in LDS churches have access to census images. They are your best bet in general. If you know death and/or marriage dates and places, you can sometimes find marriage articles and/or obituaries about the person and his relatives in newspapers on microfilm in the library. ("The best man was John Smith, the groom's brother. John is a rancher from Elk, Nevada in town for the wedding with his lovely wife Esmerelda. . .")
