I heard taxact.com lets you do taxes there and only charges the efile fee.
Also have heard bad things about h&r block, who I WAS going to have do mine, now thinking of turbotax or the taxact website

Has anything changed since last year? If you basically have the same situation, you can use last year's taxes as a guide while you do this year's taxes online for free. Also, be sure to check to see if your state has a free online filing site before you pay any money for state tax filing. About half of the states do have them. _

taxact.com has a free program. It won't ask you all the in depth questions about whether you started school this year or if you gave to a charity, but for just basic stuff, it'll do state and federal for free and it's very easy. They also e-file for free! Amazing.

Also, go to irs.gov and look for the federal tax info on their website. They give a list of websites where you can do your taxes online. I've always used taxact though.

Then you won't be able to e-file without using some kind of service. I am a tax pro so don't advocate these, but some of the tax softwares include on free efiling with the package. If you look on-line there are even a few of those that are free too, but then you will usually pay for the e-filing, and you will need a credit card to do so. If the up front cost is the problem, and you expect a refund, many tax pros can do you taxes and file them with their fees coming direct to them from your refund.

There is one option on the irs.gov website after you click on the free file button, after you click on getting started it says "take me to a company" it will ask you a couple questions one of them is your income and then it will recommend one of the companies that can handle your taxes for free... however if that doesn't work then you just don't meet the free file criteria.

Go to www.irs.gov Then click "2007 Free File". You will get a list of sites in random order. I recommend you select Turbo Tax.

I have used taxact.com for several years. It is very easy to use and it saves all of your information so you can refer back to a previous year if you need to. It costs 15.95 to file both federal and state taxes. You can download the program or do it all over the web.

To use free e-file, unless you have a friend who can sponsor the cost for you, you need to be below the income level specified by IRS.

If you make over $52,000, you should be smart enough to do your own return if it's fairly simple, using forms you can download at irs.gov or pick up at your local post office or library.

If you have a complicated return, like your own business and it's complex, then see an accountant (NOT someplace like H&R Block).
