The "best" depends on if you use Mac or PC, your skill level, what you want to pay and which continent you live on.
For PC users in the USA, Family Tree Maker ($39), Roots Magic ($29) and PAF (free) make good choices.
They will all generate reports, either ancestors of or descenandts of, once you get the data into them. If your description means:
"John Doe 4 (Thomas 3, Richard 2, Harold 1), where Harold is the starting point in "Ancestors of Harold Doe)", Richard is his son, Thomas his grandson and John his g-gs, I think FTM will do it. I like Roots Magic better, but my personal preferences are not Universal Truths. RM makes handsome reports, and thrie custom reporting is superb, but they don't have that particular format. You can Google [Genealogy Software Comparison] to get a wide range of opinions. GenForum.com has forums for several software packages. You can look at them and see what sort of problems people have.

The Latter Day Saints has free software at familysearch.org. It also has a free publishing software download.
Family Tree Maker 2005 Starter Edition no longer seems to be available. But, there is Family Tree Maker 2006 for purchase. Just put that in your search box.
You are thinking of a pedigree chart, or you may call it your "ahnentafel."

Hey D White,
Here are a bunch of sites and some comparison note sites too! I use Family Tree Maker, but one good friend says the search and edit capabilities are better in Rootsmagic.

My husband makes use of genealogy Maker and what we adore approximately that's that we can truthfully get right of entry to the cyber web seek and upload the ensuing innovations on your loved ones records besides as save copies of the source rfile. It additionally seems super custom comments with a bare minimum of attempt and that they upload new innovations and databases each and all the time, The down area is that that's extremely costly, yet pondering the quantity of innovations we've won making use of it, its paid for itself. by skill of how, it does what you reported on your question, if I understood it wisely.

I use Genealogy.com, USgenweb, Family tree maker, and rootsweb. Avoid Ancestry.com....that's good advice.
