I've been reading on yahoo answers that a lot of you recommend buying a bartending book instead of taking a bartending class. So can anyone recommend a really good one?

There are millions of millions of bartending books out there. And not one of them will give you two recipes that are the same. As a licenced bartender, I strongly advise you to take the course. Class will teach you how to make the drink as opposed to reading how. And you'll also learn what goes with what and what can be used instead of this or that. And you'll learn product knowledge. All of this put together means all the variations to all the different drinks means one simple recipe you can go off of. Instead of Cointreau, use Tripple Sec and so on. Take the course. You'll be glad you did.

American Bar by Charles Schumann

It has all of the classic cocktails and none of those neon purple concoctions nobody ever orders. Plus it's full of good info on various liquors and bar knowledge.
