My brother is the kind of type where he thinks he is always right. I'm just afraid he might one day become one of those delusional tone deaf singers of american idol where they think that the judges dont know what they are talking about when they do

Let him have his dreams...you must have some yourself, everyone outside the family will put him down, families should be there for building each other up...let someone else do the demolition work & you do the building...you never know what he may be capable of then....

Did he ask for your opinion on his singing?

If he didn't ask, just support him the best you can. Someone will tell him sooner or later that he's not that great but it's not up to you unless he asks you. His life is not in danger and he is not putting anyone's life in danger so just let it be.

An opinion from a family member when it hasn't been solicited is often ignored at best (and at worst it can drive you apart even further than you already are) because it is not seen as being objective.

Furtthermore, if it's true that he thinks he is always right, there are a lot of other life lessons that he needs to learn which you can't teach him.

This is probably not the answer that you want to hear, but life does have a funny way of giving us reality checks along the way and in order to grow your brother needs to go through this.

FWIW, the record charts are littered with people who have managed to make a career in music despite not having magnificent voices, or sometimes any voice at all. For example, Bob Dylan is nobody's idea of someone with a great voice! Madonna, when you hear her singing without all the production that goes into her recordings, does not have a very good voice in either tone or range. And there are lots and lots of others who have found a career in singing that isn't built around a sterling voice.

Unless your brother is demanding that you support him monetarily while he pursues his dream, I'd say let him alone to see what he can do. He may just surprise you, if he's determined and clever and willing to work within whatever limitations he has. It hurts no one to let him try.

A lot of people think they can sing, when they can't carry a tune in a washtub. Has he ever listened to himself on tape, withou backup singers and music. Get him to sing into a mic and he may change his mind soon.
In today's music, a lot don't even sing, they talk the words. Listen to a SONG from 20 or so yrs ago. They actually carried melodies and tunes and held notes for a few seconds or more, not like today. Music today isn't music at all most of the time. You used to be able to understand the words, not half of them.

Tell him that if that is what he wants to pursue, then you will support him. Also tell him that if wants to be a great singer to get singing lessons to improve his tone, pitch, etc. This way if he takes the lessons the teacher will correct him and you won't look like the villain. If he refuses let Simon tell him off.

The best way to prove to your brother his talent or lack of talent, is to have him record himself singing and play it to a group of people that don't know it's him (in front of him). Have them judge what they think of the singing.

A group of about 10 or 20 people should be a good poll of his talent. Just remember to tell him not get mad if people don't like it. Also if the people think it is him singing and he is standing there they may not be honest about their opinion (to spare his feelings if it's bad).

Oh girl, just tell him. Say, "I love you but maybe singing just isnt for you". Record him singing and play it back. Dont let him go on American Idol like some people who have never been told they cant sing and make fools of themselves.

Encourage him to actually get voice lessons to train his voice. A reputable voice teacher will train his voice to its potential and let him know what his actual capacities are. Stay out of giving this advice unless he asks you directly, and then gently let him know that you think he may need another form of livelihood, but this is a great hobby, etc.

He wont believe you even if you tell him so don't bother. I've known plenty of people who think they can sing but really can't - you can't convince them otherwise, they just need to learn by going to see Simon and having him say, "that was just dreadful" or "you should sue your vocal teacher", etc.
