I was startled when my new cat came up to me and started "kneading" my belly. I don't mind it that much, and she clearly loves it. But - why does she do it?

Kneading the Mother cats belly is how kittens help to get the milk to flow. so your new cat has obviously accepted you as her new "Mom" and is very comfortable with you. If she has claws it could become painful so you might want to clip them. Otherwise, just enjoy the affection!

This is the way kittens act with their Mama's you're the Mama now. She loves you and she is showing you that she thinks of you as Mama. Enjoy your cat. She can bring you many years of companionship.

My cat does this too, though more in my lap.
I think she does it to make her 'sleeping spot' more comfortable.

Maybe your cat had the intention to sleep on your belly?
