I think that any immigrant should be required to learn English, it they live here longer than three months they should have to pay taxes, and obey our laws or else, they go back to their country of origin. If I went to Mexico, France, etc I would be expected to speak their language to transact with their citizens. It should be the same in USA. No social security cards should be issued until they are U.S. citizens, I have no problem with immigrants coming to the U.S.A., as long as they obey the laws and assimilate to our ways. Not saying that they have to forget about their heritage. Just, be a proud, paritotic American, before, and after they are a U.S. citizen.

Maybe assimilate isn't the correct word. I meant to live in peace, and obey the laws, learn the language and be prud to be an American.

I don't have anything against people who want to come to the USA, for a better life.
If fact I have hispanic heritage. I alos have a hispanic, nephew by marriage from Peru. He is working on becoming a citizen and continues to learn English. He is eager to learn. So I have nothing against anyone wants a better life. When in public and dealing with businesses speak English. As far as learning English, I don't think that there should be a time limit, just a willingness to learn it.

I agree with you 100% I also think that any caught breaking the law should be shipped back with no return entry. Keep the good ones.

I agree with the English part. However, it would be unfair of us to ask them to pay taxes if they don't EARN money here. I don't think any other country requires us to pay taxes if we don't earn money there. They have to obey our laws regardless - even if they are here for an hour during transit. Come to think of it, they obey our laws on our flights in international airspace!
SSN - it is a concern, but let's take a look at a small group: international students provide an important service when they work in university setting at minimum wages. They pay tax when they work and for that they need a social security card.

I think the only immigrants in this country are the europeans. Mexican people have lived on this land with the native americans and have every right to speak their language. At least they have a language. Now, they should learn to speak the english language but make it a second language. People here in america don't obey the laws either. White republican have no right to say who comes who doesnt some into america. Paying taxes, I think they need to be paying taxs. We have poor healthy white, brown, nnd black people living off the government. It's not only the imigrants it's people in the US. My money goes to people who don't need help! I think these people are working hard and earning their money. Then we have those who in america who don't make an affort. What do you think?

I agree that it would be a good thing for immigrants to speak English and pay taxes and obey our laws.
But, let's throw you in Mexico and see how well you speak Spanish after three months. It's not as easy as you might think. You'd probably spend most of your time hanging out with other Americans.
I'm just saying - please have some compassion for those that are trying.

I agree with you on immigrants paying taxes and obeying our laws, but the English thing is hard to swallow. Most immigrants, legal and illegal, pick up English after living here awhile.
As for "assimilate to our ways", that's a little too vague for my tastes.
But overall I like the idea, a lot. Much better than the "lets build a fence" people on here.
*UPDATE* To you, cincywahine, I'm a card carrying member of the ACLU. While some people (members of the ACLU or not) may think this is too much, please don't generalize.

Elderly immigrant should be an exception to language, it's difficult for them to learn at that age, pronounciation wise it's difficult since it's their second language.

I say if it is too hard for them to learn english then we have no need for them here in the US. We are going to have enough of our own old people here, we don't need mexico's as well.

I think they would like to. That is why we need to grant amnesty. I also would like to see people try to learn English, although people need to understand it is really not so easy especially for older people. It is much harder on them (not knowing English) than it is for us.
~So let's give them a chance.
