I know cute is something you want, but you should be basing your choice of breed on the breed first and the requirements of that breed. A cute dog could end up being more than you bargained for and more work than you thought. Whatever you think you like, just be sure to really do a lot of research to make sure it's a good fit for you and your family.

You should not go by "cute" alone.
There are many other things to consider.
If you go to the AKC website or Animal Planet's, you can answer some questions that will help you pick which kind of dog is best for you (purebreed) or go to www.petfinder.com for shelter dogs near you.
- What do you mean by small? A "Paris Hilton" carry-in-your-purse dog, or a dog under 15 pounds?
- How often can you groom your dog (some need daily while others need very little)?
- How often and far can you walk your dog (some little dogs need a lot of exercise, some don't)?
- Do you want a dog who is a watchdog (barks a lot)?
- Do you want a dog who is loyal or standoffish?
- Do you want a dog that does not shed much?
- Do you want an active or mellow dog?
- Do you want a smart dog or average brained dog?
These questions will help make sure you get a dog right for you.
(I am prejudiced and think the miniature schnauzer is the best small dog.)

I think the smushy faced dogs are the cutest. I love boston terriers, pugs, brussels griffons, french bulldogs, pekenese, and shih tzus. But you should look for more in a dog that just looks. Find the dogs that are most appealing to you and research them. Make sure their personality, energy level, amount of grooming they need and other characteristics fit your life style. An example is that I love shih tzus, i think they are the sweetest dogs, and soo cute, but i couldn't keep up with their hair. They either have to be brushed every day when they have long coats, or taken to the groomer to get trimmed frequently. So i would just rather have a short haired breed like a boston. I hope this helps, have fun researching dogs, and finding your new friend.
Try looking on www.petfinder.com to see a lot of different small breed dogs.

i find most small dogs are cute lol..they all have adorable features..
1. research different breeds and their temperments
2. find out how much care is involved and how much time your family has i.e. grooming
3. research a particular breeds health issues..some breeds are more prone to health problems than others..and can impact the pocketbook with trips to the vet.
4. make sure the breed is suitable for children if you have them. some smaller breed dogs are not partial to children..especially small children. (which this can vary from dog to dog as well) also once your narrow down different breeds check around for local/ or online dog clubs and ask questions. Other owners can give you a wealth of info
5. if you choose to go to a breeder ask questions!! see the parents, get references.
6. check your local shelters..sometimes a mixed breed is the best route to go and you'll give an unwanted dog a home.
7. most important make sure your family has the time, money and love to take on a pet...and the breed fits your family.. some breeds are more active than others and some not so active.
We have 3 dogs and all three were rescued from bad circumstances. 2 are bigger 60+ lbs and the smallest is 32 lbs. The smallest was beaten and neglected and is a challenge everyday but we love her and continue to build her trust. If you do decide to go the shelter route, get as much info on the dog as you can..some good shelters have a 30 day policy where you can take the dog and see how it fits with your family and get to know the dog and their personality.

Try checking out your local animal shelter there are many cute dogs and puppies that need a home and will be great family pets. Also it is common for some purebred dogs to havemore health problems than mutts due to the purity of the species and in breeding. So when buying a pure bred dog more research is needed of the breeder. Plus the pets at the pound are a lot cheaper. Hope this helps and if you find one you should post pics. Good luck.

Chihuahuas are great little dogs. I have five of my own. They are sweet, loving, loyal, protective, great little watch dogs, very low maintenance, compact, smart, gracful, alert, swift moving little dog, with a saucy expression, terrier-like qualities of temperament, small but quite tough, fun to dress up, not only because they get cold so easily, but because they look so adorable, and they have so many cute little outfits and accessories, mine love it and come running when they see a sweater or teeshirt, you can take them with you, almost anywhere you go, and they love to be held and cuddled.

I also think Maltese, Shih tzu, Brussels Griffon, Affenpinscher, norwich terrier, and french bulldogs are cute.

I got a cocker-poo who is absolutely adorable! He looked just like a stuffed animal when he was a pup. He is 9 months now and is just a cute. He doesn't shed or smell which is a bonus! Good Luck!
