I certainly understand your feelings and respect your position and while I agree with you in theory I can't agree with you in practice.
I also served from 69 through 71 in Vietnam, my last tour as a door gunner on an Iroquois, an absolutely horrible job because you could see what was happening. I had so many bad feelings for the tactics used by the Vietcong that, at times it was all I could do to not open up those little bast*rds running around. I was always stopped by the thought that I may not be shooting at people who were guilty but people who were caught between a rock and a hard place.
The biggest problem with a police action, like Vietnam and like Afghanistan/Iraq, is that there is no solid enemy to fight. The US has still not figured out how to fight this type of a battle. A more ruthless country would surround Baghdad (to start with) and not let any water, food or medical supplies in and let now one out until the populace had destroyed each other (what the Dems want to do in their ignorance). We would then go in and "mop up". It is not a matter of winning or losing, losing has never been a possibility, it is a matter of accomplishing our plan, and that plan is to have a stable, US supportive country in the Middle East.
I tip my hat to you in your service and wish you and yours a long and happy life.

To whom do you attack? which group? where are these people ?who are these people? Are you just going to hit anybody that trips your trigger? This is why Insurgencies are such a pain in the A.S.S.!!!! That is why no one in their right mind gets mixed up in one. If you go out slaughtering people you become just as evil as the bad guys and the public will support the terrorist more and more as they will say I know the local terrorist but the Americans are infidels and not to be trusted so they will go with there local militia and that will only make our job that much harder.

I agree, our troops should be given free reign to exact reparations for their lost soldiers. Let them rain down hell's fire on those towel wearing terrorists.
