found a web site that let you find all the dickmans leaving the port of liverpool/uk, to settle abroad and make a new life. i was surprised to find that an adolf dickman left the port of liverpool,, well i know adolf is not an english/british name, i thought it might be dutch.. but german?, then someone told me that it could be austrian,, any ideas of the origin of dickman,, and no funny comments please ,, lived with this name all my life, so heard them all

Cannot imagine why you would get funny comments about a perfectly normal name like Dickman -- hang on, is that DICKman -- oh my God! -- I thought it was Duckman, my all-time favourite TV cartoon. Well, now, this is different....... Your name is not funny at all. And that's OFFICIAL -- you heard it here first!

dickman originated from from central europe during crusades, it refers to a peasant with a hump on his back that was used resting the scrotum on whilst having a pee, hence the name.....''fetch me the dickman''

have you tried the 1841 census it is free i found a lot of my ancestors on this census. also there is several sites like rootsweb they cover the whole of the uk .they really helped me a lot good luck john smyth

the spelling of names can alter over years ,try going back look at the IGI and look for variations how about Dirkman.
