Your software needs to see it and control it. Sony makes no warranty on that. Are you useing USB or FireWire. You may need to visit a windows user group and learn how to tweek the microsoft drivers. It's hit and miss with windows from system to system and camera to camera. Firewire is the best way. Generally your software has a RECORD or CAPTURE option and you select that and then turn on the camera for playback and should start to see the images on the computer view screen proving it is transferring and there should be some type of an indicator bar showing how much as transferred. You may need to get better software like Avid Free or Avid Pro or Premier or Studio 10

Basically, you need a capture deck, like Solly uses. To answer your question, you cant actually connect your camera directly to your computer, because it's analog. Get a capture deck, like Solly said, and your camera should have composite video ports and/or an S-video port. If you have S-video, use that (but make sure the converter supports S-video as well), or if not, just use composite. Plug in the cables into the converter and follow the instructions. Hope this helps!

I connect my Hi8 HandyCam to the computer with the EZMaker USB 2.0 device. The video and audio plug into the device, and the leads from the device plug into the USB and soundcard. Then you are ready to go.

My model HandyCam has a removable rubber seal covering the ports on the camera for the video and audio output. Maybe yours has this, too. GOOD LUCK!
