I believe some of the answers you got are inaccurate. The new regulation states that you must have a pssport to travel to and from Canada by AIR. Starting in Jan. 2008 you will need a passport for nay means of transportation. So, no, you do not need a passport to travel to and from Canada by land at this time, however, it is good to have one. Please read the regulation for yourself for your own peace of mind at the ebsite listed below.

If you are a US or Canadian citizen that is driving, walking, busing (anything but flying) this year you do NOT need a passport.
In a year or more you will need a passport for all modes of transportation. (No solid date is set.) To all that say you can get in, but you can''t get out, it sounds funny in the answer but it is untrue. Canada doesn't want to be stuck with your problems. So if you can't get back, we don't let you in. The rules for passports are the same for Canadians and Americans no matter which way they are crossing the border.

US citizens and residents need passports to get BACK into the USA. Right now that only applies to air travel, but I believe that it won't be long til that will be for ANY border crossing. (2008 sounds right to me.)
At the moment, I don't think you need a passport to drive over to Winsor and back, but I would go ahead and apply for one now since it looks like you'll need one in the future.

you do now! As of last week, the new law came into effect and you need passports to travel to Canada and Mexico. Used to just need drivers license and birth certificate.

You don't need one to get into Canada, but you do need one to get back. That law went into effect earlier this week for both Canada and Mexico.

You won't need the passport to leave the country, but you will need to get back home.

No, but you should have one to get back.
Technically they're only required for plane arrivals, but it would help to have one if you can.
