Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.
And now, for Margarine..
Very high in trans fatty acids.
Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it
Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Butter versus margarine as a spread? The difference is minute to me, but there are some people like my father-in-law who can even smell the difference.
I eat margarine primarily because it's less fat. But I have heard many times that butter is better for cooking -- more flavor I'm guessing.

Butter and margarine are interchangeable - use which ever way you prefer.
Some people use all margarine, others margarine in baking and butter on bread, others, like me, use all butter. Personally, I can't stand the taste or texture of margarine. Butter doesn't contain hydrogenated fats and additives - and it tastes much nicer.
Flora is a margarine, usually for spreading, not all margarines are suitable for baking.

Butter is the real thing , and yes it goes on the toast , and it depends on the items you are making , If you want a cake or something really rich you use the butter , like most people use butter when making mashed potatos , but the margarine is great for a lot of foods

Butter is a natural product made from milk, margarine (including Flora) is hydrogenated vegetable oil. The industrial process of margarine manufacture involves all kinds of chemicals - definitely not healthy, but a triumph of advertising.

Butter is made from real cow milk, margarine is not. I always prefer butter - tastes better both on the toast and for baking. Margarine is often cheaper than butter. I believe Flora is margarine.

Margarine is made from oils. Kinda like 1%milk (margarine). Therefore, in baking you would probably want butter, sauteing, is a toss up, but butter adds a better flavor.
But of course, if you are anything like me, butter is best for everything! It tastes better!
Remember ice milk? That stuff they tried to pass for ice cream, cause it was cheaper, and less fattening. Which is best? Oh, real ice cream is made with butter fat!!!

"First of all, butter, of course, is made from cream, produced by cows, and by law in this country, has a butterfat content of at least 80%. There are some premium butters on the market with 81% or 82% butterfat. Water, milk solids, and — often — salt make up the rest. The amount of salt in salted butter ranges from 1.5% to 3%.
Margarine is made from a vegetable oil, although when it was developed in 1869 by Hippolyte Mèges-Mouriés in France, it was based on beef fat (suet) flavored with milk. Vegetable oils are liquid at room temperature, but a process called hydrogenation was developed in the early 1900s that makes them solid at room temperature. Most margarine today is made with corn oil or soybean oil."
Health experts now say that anything hydrogenated is trans fat which your body can not digest. That's why it can sit on a shelf for such a long time. It causes harm to organs like your kidneys. I have not used margarine since. You can find a butter with a canola oil mix that is not hydrogenated.
Flora is a name brand margarine that is "virtually trans fat free".
Hope this helps.
