"When the whites came to our country, we had the land and they had the bible, now we have the Bible and they have the land."
I understand the literal basic meaning of it, but I am writing an essay on Imperialism, and would appreciate your input on the quote. Thanks.

when the whites took over, they lost all principle of religion and went on to conquer the land in the name of greed and no longer god. The natives on the other hand could not fight back, and turned to god because they have nothing else

When the whites came to the land they brought the bible and then they slowly start to convert those that had the land. Its not by conquering with weapons, the whites are using their belief to conquer the land. the imperialism is found in the church spreading over lands. In itself they are conquering lands and nations. Look at the countries around the world. most of Europe is Christian.

It sounds like a quote from the American Indians. They owned everything until the white man came into their lives and took their land and changed their beliefs into what the white man believes, biblically speaking. Now the American Indians have the Bible, but the white man has their land. I guess the white man didn't teach the Indians the part in the Bible that says thou shall not steal??

To some extent it might mean that like so many theories, the idealistic nature is in the right, but the practice can be to no avail because of human nature. Not saying I agree or disagree with anything, just interpreting the quote...

You could write about how Christian missionaries were unwitting, and sometimes willing agents of imperial expansion and assimilation of Native Culture.
