Even if you do not have to file, you should file a federal income tax return to get money back if any of the following apply:

You had income tax withheld from your pay.
You qualify for the earned income credit.
You qualify for the additional child tax credit.

To answer your question, at $4000 you are not required to file and in fact the IRS (and maybe even your state if you live in one of the 43 states with income tax) hope you don't. As others have already said, you will qualify for the Earned Income credit and Child Tax Credit and will get back considerably more than they withheld from your checks. You will also get at least all of your state withholding back also and some states have a smaller version of the Earned Income Credit as well.

not if its your first $4000 you have ever made (this is your first job) but you should do it anyway because you will probably get something back. if you are under 18 they cant make you pay anything so you could at least try because if anything its like getting "free" money. if you have made more than $4000 in your whole life (at a job) then you for sure have to file.

I doubt that you have to file, but if you had any taxes taken from that income, you'd probably get a refund. And you won't get a refund if you don't file.
