I am an MD. This is a very interesting question. I do not think that being gay is a choice. What you sexually lust over cannot be chosen or taught, in my opinion. Sexual lust is just too primeval of an instinct to be "chosen" by someone. There was a paper published a few years ago that showed that gay men have a certain nucleus in the brain that is far smaller than in straight men, based on autopsies of dead gay and straight people's brains. The gay men had a pattern similar to a female's brain.
Biologically, all humans start out female in the embryo, and then they become modified into males by the influence of testosterone. If you don't believe me, just examine a male human's genitals, and you will see a suture line running from the tip of the penis down to the rectum. This is where the female structures were sown together to form the male structures. Men also have nipples, by the way, another characteristic left over from starting out female. Sadly, nothing is perfect in life, and the transformation in utero from female to male that occurs in all men may in fact be imperfect in some people, leaving them still sort of partially female. It is also a fact that gay men are almost never firstborn, but have at least one older brother. The more older brothers that one has, the more likely a boy is to be gay. It seems as though the mother's body seems to revolt against the continual formation of males in her body, and perhaps produces antibodies against further males. This is just speculation, and further research needs to be done.
It is known that ~10% of men have gay tendencies, although less than half ever manefest these tendencies. It has been said that the most homophobic among us are frequently among this group of repressed homosexuals. On the other hand, only 1% or less of females manefest homosexuality. I believe this difference is largely due to the factors I have discussed above, none of which would apply to gay females. I don't have a clue about what causes a female to be gay, other than to repeat, alas, nothing is perfect, including the process of forming females. I once heard a female porn star who was being interviewed on HBO who said, "girl on girl sex is fine as far as it goes, but sooner or later I just have to have some weiner".
I hope I have not offended anyone by writing this scientific discussion, and I will keep an open mind if someone tries to rebut or challenge what I have said, hopefully confined to science and not to emotion.

Like the MD before me, I don't know if there is a gay gene, but I certainly don't think being gay is a choice one makes. For males, I think a lack of solid male influence early in childhood can lead to homosexuality, but, clearly, it can also lead to a life in prison.

not at all. i think other factors are at play that determine if someone is gay or not, such as environment, nuture, brain function and chemistry, and development of the fetus.

no, it would have bred out like mongoloidism. Men with a gene that cused them to not find women sexually attractive would now father many children, would they?
