A "duvet" or "down comforter" is a bed covering traditionally constructed of a flat, unstructured bag filled with duck or goose down. This filling is loosely distributed within the fabric shell and can be adjusted for desired warmth by shaking the down fill into position. The filling can also be distributed evenly throughout the fabric shell by means of three-dimensional fabric panels sewn between the layers of the fabric shell in either baffle-box squares or long tubes. The main feature of a duvet or down comforter is that the filling is loose and made to "loft" or fluff, trapping air and providing warmth while maintaining a light weight. A duvet/down comforter lasts longer when encased within a removable, washable cover, like a large pillowcase (duvet cover), to protect the duvet from dirt and body oils. A regular comforter is constructed much the same as a quilt, with layers of polyester or cotton filling sewn between two decorative fabric panels. It does not require an extra cover, and the filling remains in place. You can get more information and see some examples of duvets/down comforters at www.ElegantLinensPC.com.

A duvet is usually a very plain comforter, with no decorative pattern. It's designed so you can use a removable duvet cover on it, and wash the cover, rather than washing the entire comforter. For that reason, it's maybe a bit more economical than a comforter, since you can buy more than one duvet cover and switch your decor without going to the expense of another comforter. A comforter is a puffier version of a quilt, more or less, and is normally patterned in some way, although a duvet cover could certainly still be used on it.

Comforter is type of blanket or a filled blanket. Consists with top material, middle material (ie batting, padding, fill ) and a bottom material. You have to wash it as a you would a quilt. It is a finished/sealed/unit.

Duvet is a cover / slip cover that you put the comforter in to keep it clean. They come with either button closures, zippers or etc. You take them off to wash. Duvet are great for keeping your bedding clean, changing the colors in your room, and may make your comforter warmer.

Remember one thing in picking a Duvet... it adds weight to you comforter. It adds another layer on top and on the bottom. So pick a light material for a summer cover and a heavy material to bring more warmth in winter.
