Criminal profiling is completely legal. It is racial profiling that is dangerous. I take into account a variety of things when criminal profiling. This does not include race as a factor. It includes things such time of day/night, clothing, actions, reactions to police presence, area of town and many others. Most addicted drug users have a look about them. It has been proven time and time again. For example, meth users have a very distinct skin condition. They have certain physical attributes that are not normal and induced by drug use.

Burglars dress a certain way and have certain habits when casing a job. They carry certain tools and have certain mannerisms. I can spot this a mile away, based on my training and experience.

So before you start bashing criminal profiling, remember that it is legal and completely necessary. Without it, many criminals would go without being caught. And the examples I gave you are just a couple of ways we can successfully criminally profile.

You can not tell from the way a person looks if they are a criminal.

For example, My boyfriend is a 6'1" 256 pound black male. He wears big t-shirts, baggy pants, unlaced tennis shoes, and a bandada all the time. By looking at him, you would think he was a criminal. (Which is probably why he gets stop all the time for unknown reasons.)

He actually doesn't have a criminal record at all. Criminal profiling or Racial profiling is the worst.

Don't judge someone on their looks alone. You can be easily persuaded to believe something that is not true.

I would say the worst thing about criminal profiling is it takes a group of people and labels them. Just because of the way you look should not make you a criminal or a target of investigations.

Profiling, I think, has gotten a bad rap. Obviously, one of the things they look at is race. But profilers look at so much more than just race.

When used properly, it can really help. Is it 100%? Of course not. but nothing is 100%. I am not sure what the acceptable margin of error should be. The real problem is that some people are not willing to accept any margin of error. And that just is not possible.

I worked with a man who was a DHP officer for 15+ years (Department of Highway Patrol).

He told me that they pulled over non- whites twice as much just for skin color. He claimed "it's just the way it is".

True story.
