It seems that everyone answering your question thinks that all poms do is "yip". Ok, they do tend to have a very loud bark for such a small dog, but that can be a good thing. They will let you know that someone is either at the door or in your yard. If you already have kids and get a puppy, just make sure that the kids know that the puppy is fragile and can be easily hurt. I've had my kids around my mother's pom and they get along great! And I have 3 boys! Kids need to know how to handle the dog so the dog doen't feel threatened. The only draw-back that I can think of to having a pom is the shedding. But if you keep them brushed just about every day, you shouldn't have a problem with this.
Pomeranian's do make great pets, they are very loving and loyal and protective. I'd say GET ONE! Good luck in your decision.

Try not to buy one from a pet store, it is extremely rare to find a dog breeder selling to pet stores that actually cares about their craft. Visit a few breeders to find the right dog and get an idea of how they act and what they require to be healthy and happy. Try to find a breeder that can match the dogs temperament to your lifestyle. You can look on-line for a Pomeranian club, they often have breeder directories or a person you can contact for a referral to a reputable breeder in your area. The AKC has referrals to specific dog breed clubs all over the country. There are also Pom rescues you can check out.
Check into pet insurance, it can save you TONS of cash should something go wrong.
Last but not least, have your dog "fixed" according to your vet's recommendations.

Yes, they make wonderful pets! The people who have said that they are not good pets obviously haven't owned any. Pomeranians are sweet little dogs, but you should still do a lot of research on their characteristics before you buy one (www.akc.org, the american kennel club's official website, is a great place to learn about pomeranians and other dog breeds). And make sure you find a reputable pomeranian breeder or rescue to buy your puppy from.
Good Luck,

For certain people, yes. You need to do some research and make sure that you'll be able to handle a dog with their level of energy or up keep. Talk to breeders and ask them who they when suggest a pom to. Ask them how the dogs act and what they think of them. Since breeders can sometimes be biased in order to see dogs, go to dog shows and talk to handlers who have showed poms. Poms tend to be the more yappy dogs and they require a lot of time to groom. Read some of these websites to get a good idea if you could handle one:

If you like small, high energy dogs its a good a breed as any. The only thing I'd say watch out for is that coat. You just can't get away with sending it to the groomers once a month, they need an hours combing every day! Start when you get it so it gets used to it. The fur is fine and can form a mat next to the skin, and little dogs look terrible if you have to have them shaved.
Make sure you take it to puppy training classes so it learns to get on with other dogs, kids, visitors and so on and you shouldn't have any problems. They're bright, sparky little dogs.

It all depends on what your needs for a dog are in your household. Poms are very loyal to its owner. With this said, you should make sure that you have to take special attention to train a Poms with other people. They are usually not good for households with children. They have an aggressive attitude towards anyone either than the owner. Plus, the they have to have "beauty days" often. In addition to the barking issue, they also have problems snoring since they "smashed" nose. So, if you are planning on this Pom on being your bed partner, then it isn't the best choice. I have found a perfect site though that will help you choice which breed is best for you and your household. It asks questions about what you are looking for in a dog and it tells you what breeds match your needs. It is very useful!

Pomeranians are wonderful pets. We have two (male and female). Yes they bark - but when they bark - it's to protect the household. Both of our dogs are gentle with my kids and with my mother (who lives with us). We know the minute someone is close to our house. And what dog doesn't bark.
They are not high maintenance dogs - ours stay outside all day and only come in at night to sleep.
I say go for it - they are wonderful dogs and gorgeous too.

I had a Pomeranian and she was a lovely dog...I find though that if you have small children then a Pomeranian or small breed dogs tend not to be so good around them as they get snappy with them and tend to bite them if the children get too close to them...They love to be pampered...
Good Luck!

Thes best kind of companion dog is a chihuahua. The long-haired chi looks a lot like a pomeranian, but doesn't have that yippy bark.
We bought TWO from www.chihuahuapalace.com They're excellent breeders.
