You are baptized with the Holy Spirit at the time of your Salvation. As you YIELD yourself to Him after your new birth, you become more and more "filled" with the Spirit of God, but it's not an emotional thing as the Charismatics would have you believe; ie speaking in tongues, etc. It's the FRUIT of the Spirit that a Christian should strive for once saved.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Gal. 5)
1 Corinthians 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
The gift of "tongues" was a sign to the unbelieving Jews. That gift died with the Apostles. What people talk about today, is not of God!

If you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sin then the Holy Spirit baptizes you into His body which is the church. 1 Corinthians 12: 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. The Holy Spirit seals you unto the day of redemption. Ephesians 1: 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, The Holy Spirit performs a operation on you by cutting the soul away from the body. Colossians 2: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: The Bible never teaches that when we believe we are baptized in the Holy Spirit.

I believe the Biblical evidence is that we will speak in a new tongue. This was the case on the Day of Pentecost, in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10:44-48); the disciples in Ephesus (Acts 19:1-7). The other two instances of people being baptized in the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts were Paul (Acts 9:17-19), where it doesn't say he spoke in tongues, but afterward we see him write in I Corinthians 14:18 "I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all."
In the other instant, the Apostles laid hands on the converts in Samaria, and although it doesn't say explicitly that they spoke in tongues, it does infer there was some outward observable evidence they were filled (Acts 8:14-24) It is reasonable in the light of these other passages that the evidence was that they spoke in tongues.
My personal experience is, I had a brother lay hands on me, and I felt a distinct sense of infilling, but did not speak in tongues until some time later in a Spirit filled meeting.

Following are the fruits of teh Holy Spirit:
# 1 Charity
# 2 Joy
# 3 Peace
# 4 Patience
# 5 Kindness
# 6 Goodness
# 7 Generosity
# 8 Gentleness
# 9 Faithfulness
If you have these in your life, you have the Holy Spirit
Yes, it is as simple as that
I disagree with philosopher_adviser that the proof is speaking in tongues. I have known many people who are filled with the Holy Spirit that have never spoken in tongues and i have known people who have "spoken in tongues" that are charlatans

That depends on your denomination, I spoke in tongues when I got baptized, some people don't. Just feel it, don't be afraid to praise him. When you have the holy spirit you will be able to discern between worldly things and spiritual things, when something is not right or someone is going to do you wrong the holy spirit will alert you to this. That is why it is important to stay prayed up.

Some act differently when they are baptized with the Holy Spirit. Some may dance, run, jump, or simply praise God. The customary proof is the speaking in tongues. Read Acts.

You will recieve the Holy Spirit when you are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for the remission of sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Nor necessarily. You will know because first of all you are a Christian, and then you would be seeking the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Usually people are at church and being prayed for, but you can be alone.

Once you surrender your life to Christ the Holy Spirit will then dwell within you. You have to read your Bible, pray, fast, and things like that. Speaking in tounges is a sign that you have the Holy Spirit, but it can be faked. However, you will know that you truely have the Spirit of Christ, when the fruit is shown in your actions. Read Galatians chapter 5.

It's not a one time event. The Holy Spirit Guides you. As you grow in your walk with God you will learn to "hear" the Holy Spirit.
If you are having doubts it's Ok to tell God that you are and that you want to be given "eyes to see" and "ears to hear". Trust me you will know when you've recieved these. You will begin to see things in a different way.
You also have to be seeking out God in his Word. If you do not you will not grow or learn to "hear" and "see".
Tonight before you go to bed, pray to Jesus, tell him your concern and that you want to come to know him for sure and be sure that he is real. He understands your doubts.
