Forget about the tomato juice, it doesn't work. This stuff really does.

Skunk Smell Remedy

Karyl Brandon, animal science technician at K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine, has tried several experiments to remove the skunk smell from sprayed animals. As a grooming expert, she says many of the common antidotes that people try, but fail to do the job, are tomato juice, vinegar and different types of shampoos.

Brandon recommends an easy home recipe using ingredients that can be found in most drugstores.

* One quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* One-fourth cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

* One teaspoon liquid soap

She says to begin by wetting the animal down, then apply the mixture and work it through the animal's hair. Leave the solution on three to four minutes, and finish with a tap water rinse.

Caution: Make up only as much of the de-skunking remedy as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle and store this chemical combination.

Believe it or not...tomato juice..A couple of cans ..more or less depending on the dogs size. It happened to my dog up in Nebr. twice ...Kind of cold this time of the year so in the tub he goes. I believe it has to do with the acid in tomato juice, it kind of helps to neutralize the skunk odor. I saw this was posted a few days ago. That smell would be stuck in my noseso bad I would consider sniffing some of that tomato juice up each nostril.....I can imagine how the dog feels looking for a place on a high hill in a stiff breeze trying to get some relief..

Go our right away and buy TWO big cans of tomato juice (if he's a chihuahua. Then, get the dog into the kitchen sink or the tub and keep putting the stuff all over him. You'll want to throw up, but imagine how the dog feels!

Deskunking recipe given to us by our obedience trainer:

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 quart water
2 tsp. Palmolive liquid or Softsoap or Ivory liquid (DO NOT use DAWN as it is so efficient it breaks down the hydrogen peroxide and it can't work effectively)

Wet the dog's coat first with slightly warm water. Then sponge the mixture onto the coat and suds it in well. Leave on for at least 5 minutes. Rinse with warm water. You may have to reapply. KEEP OUT OF DOG'S EYES, AS THIS STINGS!

Also, DO NOT STORE THIS MIXTURE, AS IT WILL EXPLODE! Pour it down your drain when finished with it.

Good luck with deskunking!

No tomato juice. It is too acidic. Use a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. Works much better.

bathe him in tomato juice and if you don't have that and have some ketchup wather that down and use that. there is an acid in tomatoes that cuts the smell of skunks.
