Some of you are wrong. It does matter who's name is on the account. My boyfriend has his refund direct deposited into my checking account last year, and it was returned, because his name wasn't on the account. It depends on who you bank with. If you do it through HR Block and it the direct deposit is refused, they will mail out a check immediately. Hope this helps///

By the way:
I just wanted to let everyone know that if you are using HR Block online tax service with direct deposit, to beware! They gave HSBC (the bank that deposits the money into your account) the wrong account number on mine and my boyfriends tax returns. I know it wasn't my error, because I ALWAYS double check my banking info just so there isn't any mistakes. My boyfriend and I don't use the same bank, either. I don't know what's going on, but this is ridiculous. I use HR Block every year, but probably won't next year, simply because of this. There is a phone number you can call to verify that they have the correct account number. It is:1-888-503-8361....Hope this helps someone.

I am having the same problem. Earlier this week, Irs.gov stated that my refund is scheduled to be deposited on January 28, 2011. This morning, the website says that it WAS deposited on January 28, 2011. Both yesterday and this morning, I called my bank, which is a local credit union, and they state that there is nothing pending and they have not received it yet. Very frustrating!!! I have bills that I need to pay. I live in the South. I e-filed with Turbo Tax on 1/18/11, and it was accepted by the IRS same day. I bank with a local credit union. Two of my friends received theirs yesterday, but I'm not sure if they used Turbo Tax. I know they do not share the same bank as me.

Don't worry about what the bank says.

If you file your return together on a joint return, both of you are going to sign it. When you go to HR Block, you're gong to fill out another sheet for the direct deposit, and you're both going to sign that. The signatures are your agreement on how to handle the refund.

It isn't anyone's business which account you choose, just get the account numbers right.

(My wife and I have been doing HR Block for 4 years--she works there. We've never had a problem with a joint return going to a joint account or into a single name account.)

Direct deposit has no bearing on the name. As long as you provide a valid Routing # and Account #, it will be deposited into that account.

A new change for this year's filing is that you can split the refund into several different accounts if you choose:

"Split refunds. If you choose direct deposit of your refund, you may be able to split the refund among two or three accounts. See Refunds, later, for more information."

"Split refunds. If you choose direct deposit, you may be able to split the refund and have it deposited among two or three accounts. If you want to split your refund, check the box on the line for the amount you want refunded to you. Then, complete Form 8888, Direct Deposit of Refund to More Than One Account, and attach it to your return."

Yes, you can deposit it to your account. And actually, starting this year you could even split the deposit between the two accounts.

if it's a check, then both of your signature is needed to deposit into your account. if it's direct deposit, then yes. does your wife know about this? :)
