I have a pit bull. They are wonderful dogs. Eliminating a breed does not solve the problem. Maybe education, stricter penalties for animal creulty might work. It's so sad. They're great pets with such a bad rep.

regrettably, there are various breeders those days going around tainting the APBT's strains. Many breeders are going by utilising the term "the bigger the extra appropriate " and that's definately no longer authentic. The APBT is a medium sized canines that became bred to be atheletic and pastime. The Razors component or Gotti canines have been basically being bred with the aid of fact BYB's had to create some thing that no longer basically would desire to they cost alot of money for it, yet make it look as though it have been a "new breed". regrettably, what maximum folk do no longer understand is they are paying an astronomical quantity on a mutt. so a strategies as Razors component is going, it was a competent bloodline. yet that became in the past Dave Wilson tainted the strains. The Razors component author, Dave Wilson, has already admitted to mixing different breeds consisting of Mastiffs and Bulldogs to taint. yet incredibly, if somebody needs an APBT, flow out and get an APBT. don't be fooled by utilising those bogus breeders passing off canines that are probable mixed with each little thing under the trees and charging astrnomical quantities on a mutt.

That was fun---and yes I did.

I get your point, but in some regards I still think some breeds are more dangerous than others. If you had asked me to tell you which dog was dangerous on that page, I would have said the Cane Corso.

Why do people fear pit bulls? This type of dog seems more likely to inflict deadly wounds instead of less serious harm when it bites someone.

If you look at fatal dog bites in the press, the identifiable dog breeds responsible for the majority (65%) of deaths are pitts, rotties, presa canarios and their crosses.
This is a list from someone who keeps track of this stuff:
http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf

Now are the dogs all bad? Or are the people mistreating the dogs? and the kinds of people who make dogs turn bad are the same kind of people who buy tough-looking dogs? Perhaps both.

But I would like to point out that the most popular purebred dog in the US is the lab and the lab mix is probably the biggest mix. There were TWO lab fatalities between 1982 and Nov. 2006 and one of those was a rabid dog. The other was when 23 dogs attacked the owner's mother. There was one lab mix fatality.

So either some breeds are more likely to attract irresponsible owners or these breeds are more likely to do fatal damage when they bite.

I don't like breed-specific laws, but I do understand why some people want them.

Interesting site. I am not for breed specific bans. However, I am very much for legislation that requires responsible dog owners, and for individual dogs that have hurt someone to either be rehabbed or put down.
I have known some sweethearts that were breeds that are considered to be mean. Pits, Rotties,Boxers, Dobies, and mixes of those breeds. And I have known some Cocker Spaniels and several little bitty dogs that were just plain evil.
Effective legislation is going to be regarding individual dogs and dog owners, not any one or handful of breeds.
I have never trusted any of our animals completely when it came to my kids. I always, ALWAYS had my dog come with me rather than leave them in the room with my small children. The dog (or even cat) is an ANIMAL. It would be very easy for that animal to misunderstand or react to something a small child would do. SO if I left the room, the dog went with me or outside in the yard for a little while. Supervision of small children and animals is mandatory for a responsible pet owner and parent. If you aren't willing to do that, then either give the dogs to someone who will make them a good home, or don't have kids.

ANd for the person who was quoting factual statements....Cocker spaniels bite and cause more ER visits than any other breed of dog in the US. But they have big brown eyes and floppy ears, and are about half the size of most of the pits I've known...But they can still really hurt or mutilate someone, especially a child. IT's about individual responsibility. Case by case basis.

Got it on the second click.
Interesting, though, many of these breeds are not recognized by the AKC (as though THEY have any expertise).
They maybe recognized by the EKC.
I would guess that most Americans not familiar with these other dogs would have to hunt and peck a few to find the Pit.

I used to have a Pit, she died last year at 16, great dog, never bit anyone but me, once, by accident when she was a puppy, and I was holding a stick. She was a great dog. It's the idiots who try and train them to fight that are the problem, not the breed. Humans can be so ridiculous!

I got it right off the bat but only because my sister has one and it was obvious to me. (16) Pit bulls can make excellent dogs if only people would raise them right. I'm so sick of the animals getting the blame!!! My sisters pit bull is a big ol' baby who thinks she's a lap dog - loves kids - loves strangers - she's the sweetest dog!!!

Pitbulls are the number one dogs to kill humans in America and England. This is a recorded fact. These dogs are bred for pit fighting and they are trained to kill the other dog not submit it. When this aggression is put onto humans the dog goes simply to kill the child/person. This has been proven time and again. You will disagree but who cares - The facts speak for themselves. I have personally come across two pitbulls and both tried to attack my puppy. Only thing to stop it was owner who had the dog on a lead (second time owner was drunk) which also goes to prove that these dogs are owned by SOME people who don't know how to respect the dogs aggression. How many more people especially children have to be mauled or killed before you begin to accept they are dangerous. I guess if it was a member of your family you would not be so happy with the breed.

I agree, people mistake other breeds & mix breeds as being pitbulls when they really aren't. How sad!
