From my understanding and belief, he walked on the water.
Your right about the prepositions. "However" it's not what the translators wants us to think, it is what God wants us to think.
Gods power is beyond the thought and desire of man. He can make all things, even the thoughts of a translator work in his favor.
As the Roman centurian guards watched, they to were being watched and censored by our Heavenly Father.
It is God who created man and earth. Our thoughts don't even belong to us.
Mighty is his works.

You have a good imagination about the history of language.
Actually we have the original Greek text, many copies of it, which can have some slight variations, but none on this point.
Not only that, but can you see Peter being astounded at Jesus walking around the water, getting out to walk around the water with Him, then becoming afraid of the waves and starting to sink?
The text says what it says. You either believe it or you don't.
But if you believe that God exists at all, then nothing else whould be too hard to believe, should it? I mean if you qre going to believe in God, you have to believe in the power of God, I would think.

KJV and many other translations say that Jesus walked on the water. And called Peter out to walk on it too. Peter did walk on it till he took his eyes off Jesus. Then he looked down and let doubt come into him and started to sink. Jesus had to get him back in the boat.

You do not know the God of the Bible who translates into the heart where no censor is able to change. We read line upon line, precept upon precept and here a little and there a little. You think so small as mere man, but God is more than able to keep His Word sound, correct and perfect. God's Word does not return void. His Word does whatever God wants accomplished.
