Depends on where you live.

Ask to see his ordination papers or license. If he gets offended over that, then you need someone else to marry you.

The fact that he wants a few $$$ as a deposit is pretty much norm anymore. Too many couples used to choose an officiant & then suddenly find someone else, leaving the first one without a couple to marry on that date = no income.
Not all cities require a minister to register, either.

I carry my minister's ID card & I shrunk down a copy of my State's license to carry with me. (Ohio requires a minister to have a State's license as well; not all states require that)
The Secretary of State is who issues the license here, so that's one place you could check.
Ohio also has a site where you can enter a name & they tell you whether that person is indeed licensed. Ohio doesn't issue license numbers anymore; since June1976; only the date the license was issued.

You might be able to call the County Clerk to see if he's ever submitted a marriage license he's signed. They also might have a list of those ordained &/or licensed as well. Might want to start there. If they don't have record of him they can give you the office where you could call.

I send a copy of my license with the legal marriage documents if I conduct a wedding in a county in which I haven't married someone before....just so they know.

Tell him it is your policy to check out everything before putting any deposits down and ask him for his license number so that you can call the city and check it out. If he is insulted by this then he probably isn't legit. Just for the record...why would you put down a deposit with the officiant? Usually they the best man hands him the check after the ceremony?

My officiant wanted a small deposit too in order to save the date. The balance will be paid the day of the wedding.

for my section, i wish you won't be in a position of try this. My husband is retired military. The concept that between the two one among you, you won't be in a position of or at the instant are not prepared to come again up with the money to purchase an plane cost tag, a bus cost tag, a prepare cost tag, and easily get married earlier you spend something of your accountability residing off the government and flying for loose is amazingly off-putting. check out what you're particular you're doing...basically because of the fact which you get married in a hurry does no longer constantly advise which you'll be going with him to his next station.
