Does Telefonica have a monopoly in Spain? Are there other companies that offer a line without having to go through Telefonica [ and pay their charges ]?

Telefonica's monopoly is the least evil.

Other operators like Tele2, BT, Ono, Vodafone and Orange (owners of Wanadoo nad Tele2 I think. Not sure) all either lease their lines from Telefonica and end up being assigned the worst lines ("oh, no, we Telefonica don't do that, no way...) or have their own clable networks that are still in their infancy. At best they work well in big cities but don't expect them out in the far hills.

As for ADSL, Telefonica really have you by the short and curly... wires... Most of the competition leases the infrastructure and again, if something goes wrong you spend even longer on the phone waiting for support than for Telefonica (who have 1000 times better support than a couple years ago.) Try calling Ya.com's 902902902 in a hurry... And if a technician has to come out, who should turn up but a Telefonica technician who is likely to blame Ya and wander off.

Stick to Telefonica, pay their 13 € monthly fee and get service. Don't hold your breath of course. They are Telefonica. You will be assimilated.
