Ok, I know this is a stupid question but how do I do my taxes??? I have never had a job before and had never had to do them. But this past November I got a job and now I dont know how to do my taxes. What am I supposed to do?? I know it has to do with a W-2 form but I dont know what to do with that form. Im single, no kids, dont own property, over 18 (obviously), and dont have stocks. Am I supposed to fill out a form for this??? and if so, where do I get it and where do I send it once I have filled it out??
I want to do my taxes myself since Ive seen so many ppl get screwed on their taxes cuz they paid someone else to do them at H&R and I dont wanna deal with any of that.
How do I do my taxes?? I dont even know the first step in doing taxes!! Can someone please help???
Thanks A MILLION!!! Ur answers are greatly appreciated.

It's not a stupid question - people aren't born knowing this stuff, and unfortunately it's often not taught in schools.

A W-2 is a form you get from your employer, showing how much you made and how much was deducted. If you don't have this already, you should get it in the next week or 10 days.

From your description, you can use a form 1040-EZ to do your taxes. You can download that at irs.gov. You should be able to fill it out yourself - just do one line at a time, and follow the directions. It will tell you what to do with the numbers on your W-2. There will be some numbers there that you won't need, like how much was deducted for social security.

If somebody like your parents claim you as a dependent on their taxes (ask them), then there's a box to check on the 1040EZ, on line 5 I think, that says you are a dependent.

Since you only worked a couple months, you might not have made enough in 2006 to have to file. If you're a dependent, you have to file if you made over $5150. If you are not, then you have to file if you made over $8450. Even if you don't have to, file anyway if you had any federal income tax withheld and you'll get it refunded to you.

If you're unsure, find a VITA site near you and they'll prepare your taxes at no charge. See irs.gov for more info on the program.

Well since you don't know the first thing about taxes it would probably be best just to go to an H&R Block type place and they can get you started. They can explain things so you know better in the future.

And btw there's no way for them to "screw" you, they just enter your data into an online form and send it off.
