I notice a hissing sound from our gas fireplace when it isn't lit and only the pilot light is on. I called the gas company and asked them and they said they never heard of it doing that- I am worried it is a gas leak and should I turn it completely off?

Do you smell gas? If not, then it may not be a leak. If you have a leak, turn the gas off and seek to repair the leak.

Shut it off and get out! Wait for the gas company to come -- tell them you suspect a gas leak and they will come quickly. DO NOT use your house phone to call -- sparks of any kind can ignite leaking gas. This is not something to fool with -- my oven was doing the same thing!
