I have a co-worker who feeds the plants on her desk with coffee now and then. She says the pH or the nitrogen content of the coffee makes the leaves of the plant shinier and greener. Is there anything to this, or could coffee hurt a plant somehow? Has anyone heard of anyone else doing this?

PS: She doesn't give the plants coffee exclusively. She waters them too, but occasionally gives them a little of the room-temperature coffee left in her mug after she's done drinking it. She drinks it black, so there's no sugar or creamer in there.

Your co worker is correct. I do it to my plants also and they are thriving.

I've heard of people putting used coffee grounds in the soil, but never of people watering with brewed coffee.

Plants need nitrogen. It helps with chlorophyll production. So that seems valid. What I am unsure about is how much nitrogen is in coffee.....

I have heard of it and it is ok.
I put my coffee grounds and tea bags in the flower bed beside the front door, they look good to me and grow very well.

I do it. I have hardy, healthy plants. I don't use hot coffee of course, or coffee with creamer.

That is fine, as long as she doesn't just 'water' them with coffee only as you stated. I do all the time, and any extra soda pop I have...they love it! (maybe once or twice a month.)
