My daughter is 4 months old. When she was born her pediatritian noticed that the skin on her lower back did not close all the way. It is right above where the crack of her bottom starts. It is about the size of the tip of a Q-tip maybe a little larger. They did an ultrasound in the hosp. before she was discharged and it came back negative for anything wrong. After getting her home my mom was changing her and while wiping her bottom noticed she has a boney something down where her spine ends like her spine is too long. I mentioned it to the Dr. and he played it off as nothing since her ultrasound came up negative. I am taking her to get a second opinion but want to know if anyone knows what this could be??? It really concerns me. I pointed it out to the nurse today during her 4 mo physical and the nurse even agreed that it was strange. I am definitly taking her to another Dr. I just want to know what I'm in for if anyone has experienced this before. Thanks for your response!

thank you thank you! I just called Cleveland for a second opinion. We are seeing a spinal specialist on the 19th. Hopefully its not spinabifida. Her lower limbs are very strong as she tries to stand when we hold her upright with her feet on the ground. no hair in the hole....another good sign. hopefully it's nothing major. I appreciate your responses.

My 12 year old had somethign similar, although hers was more like a huge dimple in teh same spot as your daughter's. They had been concerned that as she grew if it were attached to her spinal cord that it would tear. BUT she is now 5'4" and thankfully has had no problems with it.
I would definately recomend a second opinion. Third even if that's what it takes for you to be comfortable with the results. It's your baby and YOU are teh one in the end responsible for her, not the sometimes silly Peds, some of whom will blow off ANYTHING no matter how concerned a parent is!
Any pediatricians reading this, please do not take offense as I do not mean this as a generalization, but as in every profession.....

perhaps it is a sacral dimple? i was on wikipedia this morning when i came upon an article on sacral dimple and when i read your question, that article immediately came to mind. i might be wrong, but it's worth checking out. sacral dimples might be a precursor to spina bifida. the closer they are to the buttocks, the less harmful they will be.

here is the article:

A sacral, or pilonidal dimple is a small hole located just above the buttocks. The name comes from the sacrum, the bone at the end of the spine, over which the dimples are found. More than 2% of babies may have such dimples; almost all of these are very minor. However, it may be a sign of Spina bifida: even so this is usually the spina bifida occulta form which is the least serious kind. Sacral dimples are usually spotted in post-natal checks by a pediatrician, who will check:

Can the bottom of the dimple be seen to be conevered with skin? If not, it may be that the neural tube is not completely closed.
Is there a tuft of hair in the dimple? This may also indicate problems.
Are there any other problems in the examination of the baby, such as weak lower limbs.
How close to the buttocks is the dimple? The lower, the better.

Good luck!!
